Presentation

Due to the fact that Romania is a highly semnificative seismic area, the problem of obtaining quantitative and continuous information requested by the strategies and policies for seismic risck reduction and by the safety measures taken when earthquakes occur, is highly important for our Society. The strongest earthquakes are generated in a focal volume spatially concentrated in the bending area of the Carpathian Mountains, in Vrancea area, at intermediate depths (60-170 km). Geodynamical and seismic-tectonic processes which occurred in this area, have drawn the attention of many seismologists, from Romania and from abroad. Meanwhile, taking into consideration the dramatic implications of major earthquakes from Vrancea area, for social and economical life, many efforts have been made for evaluating seismic hazard, at regional an global scale, with a specific interest for Bucharest, considered one of the most vulnerable capitals on Earth.
