The department was founded in December 2007 by joining the human and infrastructure resources of the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology teaching department, Multi User Research Center in Molecular Biology (MURC-MB) and Research Center in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (RCBBMB).
The Multi-User Research Center in Molecular Biology (BCUM-BM) was founded in 2002 and it represented the successful outcome of the CNCSIS type B project funded by the World Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
The Research Center in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (CCBBM) was founded in 2001 as a functional unit of the Faculty of Biology at the University of Bucharest.
Within the laboratories of the center, research and training activities are undertaken at the highest scientific and professional level in the fields of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Applications

Genetic biodiversity, molecular phylogeny, human and animal genotyping using microsatellite and mDNA markers,
Molecular characterization of various human pathologies: cancer (colon, prostate, mammary and ovarian), dystrophinopathies, ageing, autoimmune diseases, pulmonary fibrosis by: cell signalling; population screening; microsatellite instability (MSI), allelic imbalance (AI) and loss of heterozygosity (LOH); cytotoxic and cytoprotective effects of certain natural and synthesis compounds on primary culture cells and cell lines.
Molecular toxicology: effects of various xenobiotics and nanoparticles in the environment on animal systems (oxidative stress; senescence; apoptosis; Heat shoc proteins expression by transcriptional and translational approaches; screening gene expression modulation - cDNA array, Real-Time RT-PCR; proteom profile assessment).
Tissular engineering, biomaterials, biocompatibility: new culture biotechnologies (single layer/3-D holders) of human cells for medical use; biocompatibility studies (viability, proliferation and cell adhesion, organization of the cytoskeleton, turnover of extracellular matrix etc.) of certain new materials to be used in bone and dental implantology.
