Artistic heritage exploration, and restoration.
In the laboratory, the main methodology of investigation includes the optic microscopy and spectromicroscopy in visible light, infrared spectroscopy with Fourier Transform (FT – IR) and micro-Raman spectroscopy. Infrared spectroscopy (IR) and the Raman spectroscopy represent a modern analysis methodology, widely used in the laboratory investigations in various fields, like: physics, chemistry, pharmacy, medicine, agronomy, industries, arts, etc. In the investigation of the artworks, these two research methods may be used both in non-destructive (non-contact) investigations, by the use of optic fiber hole as well as in the destructive investigations through analytical sampling. The non-destructive investigations analyze by non-contact the surface of an artwork, whilst sampling may complete the investigations by the analysis of its stratigraphic structure. In our laboratory the sampling procedure was diminished to such extent that it may be considered as micro-destructive because the sizes of the samplings are smaller than 500 µm. The infrared microscopy (IR) and the micro-Raman spectroscopy are ideal for the analysis of some very small quantities of samplings through the micro-destructive method.
